Aerospace Engineering Open Lecture: Artificial Intelligence in Space Applications

Terma AI Space

The lecture will explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in space applications, starting with a comprehensive overview of current AI implementations in various space missions and operations, such as on-orbit AI Analytics, generative AI on the International Space Station ISS, geospatial intelligence with AI and more. The centerpiece of the discussion will focus on a recent collaborative internship project at Terma, where one of our graduate students investigated the low cost use (e.g. low power consumption) of edge AI in a novel autonomous CubeSat concept, dubbed “CubeDrone,” designed for theoretical scenarios such as in-orbit satellite maintenance and debris removal or fetch & carry applications in manned space flight. By examining the potential of AI to enhance the efficiency and autonomy of small space vehicles, the presentation will highlight the future of intelligent systems in addressing complex challenges in the aerospace sector, but will not neglect data quality issues that remain critical - reminding us that even the most sophisticated AI systems are only as good as the information they process
