Training & Sports Science Research

In Training & Sports Science Research the effects of physical activity on humans are studied. Acute and long-term physiological and psychological effects of sport are investigated.

This research area also includes the evaluation and development of technological innovations and measurement methods in sports science.

We perform research and development in the following topics:

  • Training load in cycling
  • Emotional processes in sport
  • Inflammation and stress markers in response to exercise
  • Capacity of oxidative metabolism (mitochondrial function)
  • Power development during the take-off jump in swimming
  • Strength training methodology
  • Performance development in youth atheletes
  • Performance modelling in cycling
  • Muscular imbalances
  • Use of technologies and measurement techniques in sport
  • Relative energy deficit in sport
  • Self-regulation and personality traits in sport
  • Oxygen extraction in muscle
  • Training methodology in swimming and cycling
  • Validity of performance analyses

Infrastructure:

  • Laboratory for endurance performance diagnostics with parallel measuring stations for treadmills and cycle ergometers (gas exchange measurement, near-infrared spectroscopy, blood analyses, mobile power meters for bikes)
  • Laboratory for strength diagnostics (mobile and stationary force plates, electromyography, Isomed-2000 dynamometer, video-capture motion analysis)
  • Apart from the stationary application in the laboratory, numerous mobile devices are available for data collection under real sports conditions
