"World Café" - Outgoings meet Incomings

The International Office of The University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt invited over 70 students from 25 nations to attend a world café event on April 9th designed to pair the visiting exchange students from the 95 partner universities worldwide with local students who will depart on a semester abroad in Fall 2018.  The event was hosted by Lisa M. Schreiner, Lecturer & Programme Head, Intercultural Business Skills at the University of Applied Sciences.  Ms. Schreiner welcomed all participants with a keynote address highlighting the benefits of cross-pollination amongst people from different cultures as a valuable source of learning and human understanding. The world café topics that the students worked on and presented included country mix and match, foreign cultures and me, and technology for our tomorrow. A particular highlight were the “outstanding ideas that the students developed to create a network amongst the international students that goes beyond their current studies and can be supportive of their professional and personal interests throughout their lives”, said Ms. Schreiner.

In the past eight years, ca. 80 students from around the world elect to study at The University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt each year.  The breadth of universities and countries that The University of Applied Sciences partners with provides the students with a unique opportunity to expand their horizons both on campus and abroad.

Open Day - "Taste the language"

"Tofu Kimchi", "Beaf Tapa", "Pirogi" and "Pancake with Maple Syrup": our Canadian guest student Alexandra approached the visitors in perfect German. Exchange students from 21 nations presented a variety of culinary delights and added a special multi-cultural aura to the university. The effort was worth it: the visitors were impressed.

The ultimate adventure has started!

Our student Magdalena Manzl has safely arrived in India. She is the first student on exchange at our new partner university IILM Institute for Higher Education in New Delhi. After having successfully overcome the first obstacles, she can now totally enjoy her host country. Magdalena, thanks so much for sharing your impressive photos. We hope to receive many more, and we wish you an unforgettable time abroad!

Greetings from Malta

Greetings from the sunny island of Malta! We’re here at the annual BESIG conference (Business English Special Interest Group) to get some new input on teaching trends in business. But this year, we are representing the FHWN by presenting as well! We are holding a research-based, yet practical, workshop on the benefits of warm-up activities in the language classroom. The conference is from November 11-13, so we’ll be flying home soon.

INTERNATIONAL FAIR :: 6th November 2017

The International Office, our guest students as well as former outgoings and the Institute for Languages organized the International Fair. Our visitors had the chance to explore global mobility options (exchange semester, traineeship abroad, Erasmus+, staff mobility, 95 partner universities) during personal talks. Among all guest students, who perfectly hosted this year’s fair, we raffled FHWN & partner universities' bags.

The Erasmus+ programme has been described as one of the big success stories of European integration within the past 30 years, offering more than 3.3 million students across Europe the opportunity to study and live abroad, to experience a multicultural environment, to improve foreign language skills and adaptability and to experience a different European culture.

The International Office of University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt took the 30 years anniversary as an occasion and showed the entire range of international mobility options during a special Erasmus+ exhibition.

Highlights of the event were a song and a video clip, both performed by guest students and themed around the Erasmus topic. The interested audience was spoiled with special Erasmus+ sweets from the “Mehlspeis’ Manufaktur”. Congratulations to all winners who were drawn amongst all visitors during the Erasmus+ raffle, which rounded off this successful event.

FH-Prof. Dr. Robert Pichler MBA, Head of Programme of the English-taught Business Consultancy International programme (Bachelor and Master) really appreciates these kind of events. "The Erasmus + programme offers ideal opportunities for my students to acquire intercultural skills and additional competencies at international level. My own numerous international studies at partner universities for teaching and research purposes show that a semester abroad is ideal for the future graduates of my study programme. This is made possible by the funding of the Erasmus+ mobility programme".

 Austrian Highlights

Our new exchangers explored 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites on their 1st common trip last weekend.
Bright sunshine, good mood, everyone enjoyed the sightseeing cruise through the Wachau Valley along the Danube River, followed by a tour of Salzburg's Old Town, and on to Hallstatt, via the scenic Salzkammergut region. The accompanying buddies, Nina and Lukas took great pics - have a look!

 Back to FHWN as a regular student

My name is Angelica Iannuzzi, I am Italian and studied in my home country. After my exchange semester at FHWN I decide to move to Austria again to finish my studies abroad. Studying abroad has a number of advantages, like becoming more independent and responsible. In my opinion, students who study abroad generally become proficient in language quite faster than people staying in their own countries.

When I moved to Wiener Neustadt, I started a completely new educational experience that changed my attitude about university. I attended some of FHWN classes and I noticed from the beginning the difference with my University. I noticed that the lecturers were very well prepared, that they care about each student and they could keep the attention of the students during the lesson. Furthermore, I experienced a lot of practise in all my lectures in presentations, group studying, case studies, research and many more aspects, which I think, it is such an important part of studying because, with practice, you can integrate the theory and have a more complete knowledge of the subject.

All those are the benefits that last students all their lives and make them highly desirable to prospective employers and that is why I choose University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt.

 Sweet Semester End for exchangers

Ice cream dumplings with whipped cream! The International Office had invited our incoming exchange students for a final get together, before everybody headed back home.

 Event for Guest Students :: Archery

Shooting with bow and arrow.

Team event "Outgoings meet Incomings" :: adventure exchange semester

On the 23rd of April 2016, future outgoing students from the 2015 Business Consultancy Bachelor’s year group met with our incomings students from all over the world (guest students spring 2016), in order to exchange as much information about “studying abroad” as possible and thus get to know one another better. This was the first time such an event has taken place and was hosted by successful coach and business consultant Ms Johanna Bernadette Flemming. Ms. Flemming created a dynamic setting and a delightful culinary experience for all those who attended. The well-chosen location Kultur.GUT.Natur was the perfect setting for this event.

To begin with, those that attended were introduced to "WingTsun", a Chinese Martial Art and unique fighting system that specialises in quick and effective self-defence. This was guided by experts of  WingTsun Schulen Wien GmbH. The focus was placed on the concept of mindfulness, that allowed participants to get to know one another and led to the core topics of

exchange :: culture :: challenge :: preparation :: agility

The association section and subsequent reflection part was followed by the culinary aspect of the event. The participants were offered a selection of delicious food and afterwards a barbecue was organised. This was a wonderful and informal way to end the event.

Study Trip to London, April 2016

Master Students of the Business Consultancy and Business Leadership Study Programme ( Business Consulting & Management - specialization " European Financing and Risk Management " ) were given the opportunity to visit 12 companies in just 4 days, including renowned enterprises such as Bloomberg, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, OMV, EBRD and EBA . Another highlight was the invitation from the Austrian Ambassador in London, Dr. Martin Eichtinger. At all appointments the students were introduced to the respective institutions which was a great opportunity to make new contacts and establish close ties. In addition, the participants visited the University of Greenwich, which has been a partner institution of FHWN since 2014.

(Invitation from Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger: Master students with Dr. Kinga Niemczak and Mag. Claudia Streitz, department Finance)

Open Day - Taste the language, March 2016

Thanks to the hard work of our guest students (some of them even showed up in their national costumes) and the guidance of their German lectureres, visitors at the University's Open Day were offered the unique opportunity to taste the culinary traditions from eleven countries. The visitors were impressed by the diversity and the quality of food and showed great interest in our visiting students.
